Augmented Reality vs Mixed Reality

For years, both the Augmented and Mixed Reality have been used interchangeably, but advancing technology has made essential being able to differentiate them. Below we will show you what are the main characteristics of each one.

The Augmented Reality is the technology that superposes virtual elements on the elements of our environment. Reality is augmented through the devices which superposes sounds, videos, data, pictures or animations. On the other hand, the Mixed Reality joins virtual and real world to generate a new environment. People and elements -both real or virtual- interact with one another without limits.

In Mixed Reality, real and virtual elements creates a new environment where action happens.

The main difference between both concepts lies in the core of Mixed Reality: real and virtual elements must interact with one another, in real time and in a new environment created from the junction of both realities. In other words, virtual elements are not the only ones which interact over the real world (something that happens in the Augmented Reality). In the Mixed Reality, real elements also can modify the virtual world, independently where the experience is taking place.

The Mixed Reality concept was first used by Microsoft during the release of the Microsoft Hololens. With this project, the giant tries to take a substantial step on the user interface development, as well as leading the full integration between real and virtual world.

By now this AR glasses has only been release for developers but the whole world is waiting for them. Some daily uses of the Microsoft Hololens are people intercommunication, the product design and creation, the learning or entertainment. For now, every videos and presentations are just simple examples. There is no tools or software developed for this new technology, nor a critical mass to use this content.

Microsoft Hololens proposal is utopian, but not the technology. Certainly, this is the goal we are headed. We are approaching a future where the democratization of modern technology is essential. A new world where content and user experience simplicity will make the difference. The time it takes to achieve it will depend on companies as ours.
