Case summary

Interactive anatomical 3D models of animal organs with four evolutionary stages of different pathologies for the training of veterinary professionals from Dechra.

Dechra is a world-leading veterinary pharmaceutical company with commercial presence in 88 countries and more than 3,700 employees dedicated to developing medicines for animals. In a sector where ongoing training of healthcare professionals on animal pathologies is a recurring necessity, Dechra sought a tool that combined advanced scientific education and interactive visualization. The answer is Dechra 3D Anatomy, an interactive infographic featuring three-dimensional anatomical models of the kidney, ear and heart, which allows veterinary professionals to explore animal anatomy and observe the evolution of various pathologies across four stages.

01 The challenge

Teaching complex pathologies beyond the anatomical layers

Veterinary training in anatomy and animal pathologies has traditionally relied on static materials: illustrated slides, anatomical atlases, photographic sections, and masterly explanations. However, understanding a complex organ—its three-dimensional structure, its internal components, physiological variations, and the various pathological states it undergoes—is practically impossible with two-dimensional resources. Dechra needed a tool that would help healthcare professionals overcome this cognitive limitation: exploring the anatomy from within, understanding the mechanism of a pathology at each of its stages, and consolidating scientific knowledge through a visual experience that is natural and accessible.

02 The solution

Interactive anatomical 3D models by evolutionary stages

The solution is Dechra 3D Anatomy, an interactive infographic with three-dimensional anatomical models of the kidney, ear, and heart, in which the veterinary professional can freely explore each organ and activate interactive points with detailed scientific information. Each model is displayed in four distinct evolutionary stages, allowing the visual comparison of the healthy organ against the different stages of the pathology. The experience integrates graphics, animations, and clear explanations of each phase, and it was designed to be gamified, didactic, and adaptable to different levels of knowledge, generating a five-fold increase in the number of interactions compared to other conventional training formats.

Key learnings

What this case teaches the sector.

01

An organ cannot be understood in two dimensions.

Traditional veterinary training has relied on anatomical slides and atlases, but understanding the three-dimensional structure of an organ and its internal components is difficult to achieve with flat images. An interactive 3D model allows the professional to explore the organ from any angle and consolidate spatial knowledge.

02

Comparing the healthy and the sick organ teaches more than describing them separately.

Showing four evolutionary stages of a pathology in the same organ —from the healthy state to the most advanced state— transforms static teaching into comparative teaching. The professional no longer learns about isolated diagnoses and begins to understand the progression of the disease.

03

Gamification multiplies interaction with scientific content by five.

Well-designed educational content can have a rigorous scientific foundation and yet be attractive and accessible. When professionals interact with the information rather than reading it, the interaction is multiplied by five compared to traditional formats, and knowledge retention increases significantly.

04

The digital anatomical content is scalable to any language and healthcare system in the world.

A digital anatomical 3D model becomes a reusable asset for the pharmaceutical company: it is translated, adapted to each local market, and distributed to the 88 countries where the brand operates without logistical dependency. The initial investment is globally profitable.
