Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health, a leader in animal health, drives veterinary training through advanced digital tools. In the field of joint health, its goal was twofold: to improve specialised training for veterinarians and to make communication with the owner easier during the consultation. Both ran into the same obstacle: the difficulty of visualising complex internal structures on a static chart. The answer was an interactive, multi-device 3D tool that faithfully reproduces canine joint anatomy and pathologies, allowing them to be explored from any angle, in the clinic or at the referral centre.

Understanding and communicating joint pathology

Joint anatomy is hard to teach and even harder to explain. A veterinarian masters the theory, but conveying to an owner with no clinical training what is happening to their dog's joint —and why treatment is needed— remains a communication challenge. Static charts and X-rays don't solve it: they don't let you rotate the structure, isolate a muscle or show the difference between a healthy joint and a pathological one. Boehringer needed an innovative, hyper-realistic, shareable resource, usable in clinics and referral centres alike and adaptable to PC, tablet and mobile.

02 The solution

A digital twin of the joint

The solution was the JointsTool 3D application, a digital twin of canine joints based on high-definition images and advanced anatomical modelling. It allows healthy joints to be explored in detail, the muscles involved to be analysed, the most frequent pathologies to be visualised, and each structure to be rotated, isolated and examined in hyper-realistic 3D, as well as giving access to technical documentation and training materials. The veterinarian interacts intuitively with the models, analyses them from any angle and uses them as visual support while explaining the diagnosis to the owner. A single resource that serves, at the same time, to train and to communicate.
