Case summary

Digital ecosystem of the Celtiberian route

Soria Provincial Council has driven the digital transformation of the archaeological heritage of Celtiberian Soria, integrating five landmark sites —Numancia, Uxama, Argaela, Tiermes and Garray— into a single digital ecosystem. The project, “Soria es otra historia”, aims to give that legacy of two thousand years of history a single voice and bring it closer to a visitor who today discovers the world through a screen. From that ambition came a digital ecosystem that brings the five sites together in a single narrative, combining a Web App, Augmented Reality, digital twins, Virtual Reality and AI avatars. The goal: to increase the province's tourism competitiveness with innovative experiences, guarantee universal accessibility and unify the Celtiberian legacy on a cohesive, measurable, scalable platform.

01 The challenge

Five sites, a single digital reality

Five Celtiberian sites —Numancia, Uxama, Argaela, Tiermes and Garray— and five different ways of telling the same story. Uneven levels of digitalisation, content scattered across heterogeneous media, outdated signage, no multilingual layer and no common ecosystem for measuring visitor behaviour. Added to the fragmentation were demanding technical constraints: sites with no electricity supply, low-coverage areas and the accessibility, sustainability and GDPR requirements of the NextGenerationEU framework. The challenge wasn't only to deploy technology, but to design an architecture capable of unifying the experience, being managed in a decentralised way and scaling to future sites, so that five isolated places would finally tell a single story.

02 The solution

Digitalising Celtiberian archaeological heritage in a single ecosystem

The solution turns the five sites into a cohesive cultural circuit that visitors travel from a single Web App (PWA). From their phone they access an interactive map that connects the sites, listen to audio guides in their language, scan QR codes that unfold WebAR scenes on the ground and walk through navigable digital twins. The experience is enriched with conversational avatars powered by generative AI, Virtual Reality tours and projections that reconstruct Celtiberian life. Underneath, a multi-level Content Manager lets each site manage its own content and reports interaction and visit data to the Provincial Council.

Key learnings

What this case teaches the sector.

01

The value isn't in digitalising, but in connecting.

The difference between digitalising and transforming lies in the connection. Five sites with isolated solutions remain five disconnected visits; integrated under a single digital hub with a centralised CMS and multi-level governance, they become a single narrative circuit that visitors travel as one continuous story.

02

Designing for real connectivity, not ideal connectivity.

Archaeological heritage rarely enjoys the best connection conditions: there are sites with no electricity and low-coverage areas. Designing the experience under that constraint —optimised content, a lightweight PWA, operation under variable connectivity— makes real use of the technology experiences possible in open-air spaces.

03

Data turns heritage into strategy.

When every visitor interaction feeds an analytics dashboard, heritage stops being managed by intuition. Knowing which site attracts the most, which experiences get completed and which content works turns a network of monuments into a base on which the Provincial Council can plan its future tourism strategy.
