Case summary

An interactive 3D infographic that recreates a smart city to show the real impact of Libelium's twelve IoT products on the urban environment.

Libelium is a leading company from Aragon in the development and manufacture of IoT solutions for urban environmental analysis, involved in smart city projects around the world. Its catalogue combines sensors and devices specialised in measuring air quality, noise, traffic and other key environmental indicators. To bring the usefulness of these products closer to its target customers —public bodies and B2B leads not always familiar with the technical terminology—, Libelium has developed Iris 360, an interactive 3D infographic that recreates a virtual city and shows how each IoT solution works on the real environment.

01 The challenge

Making IoT understandable to non-technical leads.

Libelium faced a challenge typical of B2B marketing for advanced technology: how to get clients and leads unfamiliar with IoT's technical terminology to understand the use, the benefit and the real impact of its products on the urban environment. Its solutions —air quality, noise and traffic sensors, among others— solve specific smart city problems, but explaining that with text, data sheets or traditional presentations didn't convey the power of what the technology really does on the ground. A tool was needed to translate technical complexity into immediate visual understanding.

02 The solution

A virtual smart city with twelve active IoT solutions.

The solution is Iris 360, an interactive 3D infographic that recreates a smart city and shows Libelium's IoT solutions in operation on a real urban environment. The experience integrates twelve of the company's products at different points in the virtual city, accompanied by charts, reports and explanatory content with carefully crafted UX/UI design. Visitors navigate the city, activate each solution and see how it translates into actionable environmental data, in an experience that explains what a text or an image can't on their own. Accessible from any device, it's easy to distribute among public bodies and partners.

Key learnings

What this case teaches the sector.

01

IoT needs a context to be understood

An isolated IoT solution is hard for a purchasing committee or a public body to grasp: measuring air quality or noise sounds abstract. Recreating the city where the product operates and showing in real time what it captures turns a sensor into a concrete political or business decision.

02

Tripling the speed of comprehension is tripling conversion

The bottleneck in B2B technology marketing isn't the lead, it's the time it takes them to understand the product. When an interactive infographic triples the speed of comprehension, the sales cycle shortens and conversion on the same volume of leads multiplies.

03

Distribution is as important as content

An interactive experience that only works in a demo room limits its impact. Designing it to be accessible from any device and browser turns it into a tool the salesperson shows in a meeting, the marketing team shares on social media and the public body reviews whenever it wants.

04

Technology marketing needs a laboratory too

Companies that develop technology don't always experiment with how they communicate it. Treating marketing as a space for technological experimentation —immersive formats, 3D infographics, interactive tours— is what separates the brand that just sells a product from the one that defines how its sector is talked about.
