Case summary

An exclusive Iberdrola virtual space hosting the first Annual General Meeting of a Spanish company in a virtual environment, accessible to its 600,000+ shareholders.

Iberdrola is one of the leading electricity companies on the IBEX 35 and a world leader in renewable energy, with more than 600,000 shareholders spread across the globe. In 2022, at one of its general meetings, the company decided to take a pioneering step: to turn the traditional annual gathering with its shareholders into a virtual event, accessible from anywhere on the planet with no travel and no capacity restrictions. Iberdrola thus became the first Spanish company to hold its Annual General Meeting in a virtual environment, a technological milestone that combined live streaming, personalised avatars and an immersive tour of its energy projects.

01 The challenge

An Annual General Meeting for 600,000 global shareholders.

Iberdrola faced a challenge typical of large listed corporations: how to extend participation in its Annual General Meeting beyond the physical capacity of a room and the geographical limits of the headquarters. In a company with more than 600,000 shareholders spread across the world, the traditional model —in-person meeting for the main shareholders and minutes sent to the rest— was limiting in terms of involvement, transparency and experience. The challenge was to design a pioneering format that would bring the maximum number of shareholders together in a single gathering, maintaining the institutional rigour of the Meeting and adding a new level of immersion and participation.

02 The solution

An exclusive virtual space with a personalised avatar.

The solution is Iberdrola's virtual space, a digital environment with exclusive access for shareholders that lets them follow the live stream of the Annual General Meeting while navigating with a personalised avatar through a virtual recreation of the company. The experience integrates the group's key sites —hydroelectric plants, photovoltaic plants, green hydrogen generators, offshore wind farms— and thirty innovation projects open to visitors that shareholders can explore before, during and after the stream. Accessible from any device, it turns a formal annual event into an immersive experience aligned with Iberdrola's commitment to digitalisation.

Key learnings

What this case teaches the sector.

01

The virtual corporate event removes the physical capacity barrier

A traditional Annual General Meeting limits its reach to the room's capacity and to those who can travel. Moving it to a virtual environment allows the simultaneous participation of hundreds of thousands of globally distributed shareholders, turning an exclusive event into an open, truly representative experience.

02

Corporate governance is also brand experience

The Shareholders' Meeting is one of the most visible moments for any listed company. Turning it into an immersive, digital experience rather than a mere formal act is a strategic decision: it communicates innovation, transparency and modernity to the market, analysts and shareholders as a whole.

03

A virtual space goes beyond the one-off event

Designing the environment as a recreation of the company —power plants, energy parks, innovation projects— turns the Meeting into an experience that lasts beyond the event itself. Shareholders don't just watch the stream: they explore the company and understand its strategic bets first-hand.

04

Technological innovation reinforces business leadership

For a world leader in renewables, being a pioneer in corporate governance formats too isn't incidental: it coherently reinforces its leadership narrative. When how a company communicates is aligned with what it does, the message gains solidity with investors, shareholders and public opinion.
