An education-focused VR web platform that centralises KAI's catalogue of immersive experiences and access to them from multiple devices

KAI XR Platform is the Virtual Reality web platform of KAI, a US company specialised in bringing VR into educational programmes across the United States. The application centralises the client's complete catalogue of immersive experiences —organised by themes such as science, technology, travel or sport— and allows access from computer, mobile or Virtual Reality headset with no installation. Designed 100% for a young audience, the platform has become one of the most widely used gateways to immersive learning in US classrooms, with more than half a million children accessing it from 23 countries.

01 The challenge

Designing a VR platform built 100% for children.

With the arrival of Virtual Reality in educational programmes, KAI was born with the ambition of transforming US classrooms and revolutionising the way the youngest learn about the world. The team had made great progress producing VR videos and experiences, but needed to take a key step: organising all that material into an accessible platform and a solid content manager. The big challenge lay in the user experience, since every UX/UI decision had to be focused exclusively on a young audience, a profile that demands maximum simplicity, clarity and intuitiveness.

02 The solution

A simple gateway to the VR educational universe.

The solution is KAI XR Platform, an intuitive interface where the catalogue's Virtual Reality experiences are organised by theme: science, technology, travel, sport and many more. The VR web application is sophisticated yet accessible, and works from any device —computer, mobile or Virtual Reality headset— guaranteeing children can access the content without friction from any educational setting. The platform includes a content manager that lets the KAI team expand and manage the library autonomously. Today more than half a million children access the educational experiences from 23 different countries.

Key learnings

What this case teaches the sector.

01

Children's UX/UI as a discipline of its own

Designing a VR platform whose end user is a child isn't a simplification: it's a discipline of its own. The interface must be immediate, intuitive and solid enough that the child needs no outside help, but also rigorous enough in content control to be educational.

02

Architecture as a differentiator

In large-scale educational content offerings, the platform isn't a wrapper: it's what decides whether it works or not. Organisation by theme, navigation, the content manager and the user experience are what turn a library of VR videos into an educational product.

03

Multi-device accessibility

The platform works in a web browser, on mobile, on computer and on Virtual Reality headsets. Far from being a technical detail, this decision is the reason more than half a million children have been able to access the experiences from 23 different countries with no hardware barriers.

04

A technical decision that defines the business model

KAI XR Platform was built as a web application accessible from the browser. That apparently technical decision shapes the whole model: it lets a school try the platform with no paperwork, a teacher open it in class from any device, and content be updated centrally without depending on installed versions.
